Flaunt It! Beginning Personal Branding for Service Providers

Beginning Social Media Personal Branding Tips

One of the first things that I do when I begin social media management services for service provider clients, is to audit, analyze, assess, and create a plan of action for their websites and social media account.

About 80+% of the time, when I go to look at someone’s social media account, or website even, I rarely see *them.* That’s a problem.

And what I mean by that is, if I’m a potential client and I go to your social media account, I should very quickly be able to know who you are, what you look like, what you sound like, and be able to get an idea if we’d connect. I should be able to recognize you on the street.

Many of my clients- best lawyers, doctors, coaches, or realtors- hesitate to be visible on their website because they are worried about seeming vain. They want to appear humble=. That you’re not cocky or flashy. So they revert to showing beautiful images (or sometimes not so beautiful) stock images that might appeal to their demographic. And vague, general information about what someone in their profession does.

It’s time to to get out of that frame of mind that it’s cocky or vein to show off who you are.

When a potential client comes to your social media, one of the first things that they should see is your face. They need to get to know YOU as a provider which will lead to a booking or interview. They should get to know you and what you stand for and it should be clear to them how you

Think about it this way. If you weren’t handling your social media and hired me to do it for you, what do you think that I would be showing?

I’d be showing off YOU. I’d be bragging on YOU. I’d be putting YOU in front of the potential client so that they were enthralled and excited after seeing how awesome YOU are. I’d be helping to create content that showed YOU as the authority in your field. They’d be sold and chomping at the bit to work with you.

Because guess what…

YOU are the product. YOU plus the transformation that you can provide to the potential client.

People don’t book you because of the potential benefits of working with someone like you. They book with you because they know you, they like you, they trust you and you’re going to bring some sort of change or transformation to their life or their experience.

Sometimes my clients also lack the confidence to get in front of the camera or lack the confidence of showing off themselves on social media.

They’re afraid people aren’t going to like them.

Truth time….PEOPLE WILL NOT LIKE YOU. I guarantee it, no matter how amazing you are. They’re not going to like the way that you look. They’re not going to like the way you dress. They’re not going to like how much or how little makeup you wear. They’re not going to like your voice. They’re not going to like how you do things or think about things.

That’s a good thing! We want to eliminate those folks from our radar anyway.

You have to move beyond the fear of being disliked and see it as an advantage.

So if a potential client sees you and there’s something about you they don’t like, then GOOD. You’re now not going to waste time, money, and energy on this potential client only to find out they end up not being into you anyway. You can head off all that wasted time, energy, and money in the beginning if they get to know you via yoursocial media account from the get-go. It’s really that simple.

Remember that you are the product.

So let’s look at some things that you can do easily, quickly, and implement right away to start showing off the awesomeness that is YOU!

1. Your Banner Image

One of the easiest and quickest ways to show YOU off, is to put your awesome face on the banner of your social media page.

A picture is great. Video is better but we’re focused on quick implementation here.

Having your face, hopefully, a professional one, will make a huge difference

It’s one the first thing someone sees.

No one visiting my page will have any doubts who I am or who they're booking with. It could be anything:

  • A professional headshot
  • You serving a client (with their permission and a signed media release of course)
  • A graphic that includes your face
  • Anything that fits in with your brand that includes your face

As an example, what I do on my business consulting page is that I have an image that shows my face somewhere in it, but also shows what I want to the follower to do (download something, sign up for something, book me, watch a video, etc)

Because I am on my banner, they get to see my face (whether they like it or not lol) and if they don’t like it, they can go elsewhere which is fine with me

You can make a graphic like I have, that highlights whatever you’re focused on at the time, be it a product, service, lead magnet, etc. I’ll also usually do an arrow that points to this call to action button that will link them to whenever I want.

I typically make these in Canva or Photoshop. They have many templates with the pre-made dimension. Canva is free for the basic level, and I can very quickly knock out a beautiful graphic within a few minutes.

2. Personal Posts and Pictures

The next quick and easy way to show off YOU is to use personal pictures, stories, and videos of yourself.

If you’re comfy showing images of your family, heck even just your dog, you’ll often get great engagement.

Some of the best engagement I get on Facebook is when I let people know what I’m doing with my family.

As an example, I’ll post a selfie of me and my family just saying “We’re camping this weekend and having a blast enjoying nature” and it will get amazing engagement. Of course, it had nothing to do with my business but gave them a glimpse into who I am.

These also require 0 effort. You don’t have to make a graphic. It doesn’t even have to be a high-quality image. It can just be a simple selfie.

These posts don’t have to be about your hopes and dreams, they can just be a simple pic of what you’re doing today.

You don’t want to do these every day, of course, but even a few times a month will work wonderfully.

Create that know like and trust with your followers and that will help them take the next step to contact you, get in touch with you, book an interview, or just go ahead and book you.

3. Page Profile Picture

Not only do I like to have my face on the banner, but also in the profile picture. If you don’t have your picture on the banner, I highly recommend at least having it as the profile image.

Note: This isn’t necessarily relevant if you’re an agency, retail, or if you have a lot of staff providing services, as this one is more relevant for solopreneurs and service providers.

I put my professional headshot in my profile pic. This is not a place that you want to put your personal selfie of you sweating from the gym. This will be something people thing see as your brand and your professionalism.

As much as you love your logo, which is what most folks put here, no one connects with a logo. No one books you because you have a nice logo. Logo brand recognition might work for corporations, small businesses, and retail, but that’s not you. Putting your face on there, front and center, because you are your product, is more important for solopreneurs.

You can absolutely put your logo on your banner along with the image of you, though to show off that amazing logo you created.

4. Video

If you’re not making videos, you need to be. Like now.

If you work with me, you’ll quickly learn that I am ALL.ABOUT.VIDEO. Video is king when it comes to digital marketing.I know that it can be daunting, but it is an extremely important piece of marketing now and moving forward.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time on doing videos. It doesn’t have to be daunting.

Just going on and livestreaming on your page does a great deal for your engagement and getting in front of your followers. That’s the number one way that you can build true know, like, and trust with your followers.

You don’t have to come on and do a serious topic on your livestream. You can go live on the fly if you want and can do a quick livestream of yourself doing all sorts of things.

An example: Let’s take a doula for example. She could livestream as she’s about to walk into a hospital. She can hope on a livestream and say  “hey, I’m headed into XYZ hospital today. My 3 favorite things about doula-ing in this hospital are” ….. And then connect it to how those things are able to help you make her clients’ experience more awesome.

My minimal notes on my live streams. Keep it simple! If you’re not an on the fly person, you can also do an educational mini-topic very easily. It doesn’t have to be a giant complicated webinar. You can just jot a few notes down to keep you on topic and talk about something simple and relevant to your potential clients.

Pictured are my notes in an hour long livestream talking about my favorite topic… videos! Minimal notes. I just gave my audience value by talking about what I know!

Videos also help you go into publishing tools later and see how the various video topics did. What are people interacting with most? What is the engagement like? How long are they watching? If you do a different topic each week and your engagement is awesome on one particular topic, then you’ve got a topic that you should hone in on in the future. It might also help to reveal what your followers are most into so that you can use this for future branding decisions.

What’s also great is that a potential client can go to your social media, go check out your videos, and get a really good idea of who you are. (Reminder: you’re the product)

That’s where that confidence comes in though… you have to have confidence in yourself that you’re going to put yourself out there- that people are going to like you and want to work with you (and forget about those who won’t)

So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

Do baby steps if the thought of this stresses you out. But do implement one of these. They’ll only take a few minutes and your potential clients and your followers will start to connect with you in a more real way.
